Chapter 4 con't (last part btw)
Rowena glowered at Salazar’s retreating back and Helga looked as if fire would shoot from her eyes at any moment to impale him in mid-step. Godric regained is normal color and watched his old friend go with a worried frown.
The castle was so bone chillingly quiet that they could hear his feet touching the stone floor as he retreated to the comfort of his dungeon.
“Where did you go?” Rowena asked Godric as soon as Salazar’s footsteps faded away.
“To see an old friend.” he replied and started sifting through his plate to see what all the elf had brought him, which appeared to be the entire kitchen pantry.
“Well?” Helga said impatiently as she didn’t like unanswered questions.
Godric took in the fork she was brandishing as if it were a lethal weapon ready to strike him down if he didn’t give a satisfactory answer and said, “I went to an old friend to offer him a teaching position.”
“Not Uric.” Helga said with disgust and groaned at Godric’s nod.
“He’s not that bad Helga.” Godric said imploringly. “Besides, he can help us determine whether or not Slytherin has gone back on his word to me.” He glanced at the doorway Slytherin just walked through with a troubled sigh. “I’m afraid I no longer need Uric to give me an answer though.”
He sat silently, looking crestfallen. Rowena and Helga looked at each other uneasily, neither of them were use to him acting this way.
“I’ve been doing a bit of thinking,” he said surprising them out of their worry. “Evil has had a free hand in this world for far too long.”
“Tell us something we don’t already know.” said Helga sarcastically.
Godric smiled at her and continued, “I’m going to let you two in on the reason why I chose this place to build our school.”
Helga raised her eyebrows and sat back in her chair waiting. Rowena whistled under her breath and smiled.
Godric sat up and moved his plate away from him so he could put both arms on the table. He leaned forward and continued in a serious tone, “The reason I chose this place for the castle is because of the power that resides here. I know you two have felt it and I believe so has Salazar, which is why what I’m about to do is important to us three. I need your help.”
“All you have to do is ask.” Rowena replied.
Helga nodded her agreement.
“We don’t have to worry about the castle as long as we three hold it.” he began talking quickly, “The merfolk can not be touched by evil which means the lake is protected so we are protected. The mountains have a magic of their own that I do not even want to think about which leaves the forest. It is pure. But how pure is it going to stay?”
He stopped there and looked as if he were lost in thought.
“Where are you going with this?” Rowena asked pulling him back to the moment.
“Sorry I got a little...” he said exasperated. “Back to the evil of the world. I intend to make a spot in the center of the forest, a ‘sponge’ if you will, to soak up all of the evil magic that is out there.”
Godric looked back and forth between Rowena and Helga, both women looked lost. He took a deep breath and went on, “Alright, I planted a tree when I decided upon this spot. It is now as tall as me and still young in it’s own natural magic. I intend to twist that tree into what I want it to be, a sponge for all the evil magic. But I also intend to make sure that the sponge cannot be wrung out.”
A light dawned in both women. “And how do you intend to do that?” Helga asked.
“By binding the tree to the lake, the castle and whoever is in charge of the castle.” he answered.
“But,” Helga began, “if you bind the tree to the Headmaster and the Headmaster is a dark wizard...”
Rowena grinned, “So that’s why you said right from the off that ‘no dark magic can ever be taught here’!”
“Yes,” Godric nodded. “I think we all know that Slytherin will teach the dark arts to the students he selects. Therefore, we must stand together to keep the castle in the hands of good witches and wizards.” He paused before adding thoughtfully, “In the future, after we four are gone, I see House Slytherin standing alone.”
“Godric?” Rowena said sobering.
“Hmm?” he replied.
“If you make the tree this sponge, won’t the forest become evil?” she asked.
“Not to mention if this information go out, there could be a war over who takes control of it.” added Helga.
“Yes and no.” he replied. “Yes, the forest will become an evil place and no, there will be no fighting because the Headmasters and Headmistresses of this school will be the tree’s protectors.” he said proudly, “They will protect the tree as they protect this school and it’s students. I will also find Guardians for it as well to help keep it safe.”
He got up from the table and began to turn only to turn back to Rowena Helga. “Look upon the beauty of the forest as it is today for a thousand years from now it will be a dark, forbidding place.” he said sadly. He thought for a moment and added, “The forest will become known as the Forbidden Forest and the tree at it’s heart, The Heart of Darkness.”

Chapter Five: The Naming
The next few months were spent putting the finishing touches on the castle.
Salazar Slytherin’s knowledge of potion making and the ingredients needed for complicated potions, plus their weaknesses to sunlight and other non-mentionables, led him to place several large potions rooms and storage cupboards in the dungeons.
With Helga Hufflepuff’s knowledge of magical plants and how to tend them, she alone made excellent use of a little nook Godric left her on the grounds to build several large greenhouses.
Rowena Ravenclaw used her charming knowledge to the layout of the classrooms and the towers which reached alarming heights.
While Godric Gryffindor spent his time finding ways to make the future students sharpen their reflexes as well as their minds. It was not uncommon to walk down a corridor and hear him chuckle about another trick staircase or doorway he'd constructed.
After their toils were done the only thing left was to find their students. Rowena and Helga set about this task right away while Godric began working on his little tree in the forest. Salazar disappeared for long periods of time. The others, enjoying his absence, made no comment.
Finally about a fortnight later, triumphant, Rowena and Helga came into the Great Hall where Salazar and Godric were sitting eating their dinner.
Helga was the first to reach the table. “Budge up there.” she said tiredly. “And hand us some plates.” She sat down at the end of the table next to Slytherin and began filling a plate.
“We may have found a way.” Rowena said in a delicate voice as she walked around and sat down next to Godric.
“Oh don’t be so modest Row.” said Helga bringing the fork full of kidney pie up to her mouth.
Rowena looked severely put out at Helga as Godric pushed a plate of some meat, vegetable and herbs at her. She was about to push it away when Godric said, “Just try it, it’s really good. Just don’t ask me what it is cause I don’t know.”
She took a bite and sighed contentedly, “This is wonderful.”
At that moment, one of the house elves popped into being in front of the table, bowed then disappeared. The next second two large bowls of the mixture appeared on the table in front of them.
“We really don’t deserve them.” Rowena said with raised eyebrows and a rueful grin.
“It’s an even trade.” Godric said before shoveling a spoonful of the thick meat soup onto his plate. “They have our protection for however long they need it in exchange for taking care of the everyday chores.”
Rowena shook her head. “It still doesn’t seem fair.”
“Fair or not,” Helga added. “They are enjoying themselves.”
After they finished off both bowls they went into a room off of the Great Hall. A large fire was blazing merrily in the hearth and several comfortable chairs were placed all about the room with tables placed here and there near them.
“Rowena,” Godric said picking a chair and siting back in it. “Weren’t you going to tell me what you and Helga have figured out about finding the children?”
Rowena looked startled for a moment and glanced at Helga for support, Helga stared blindly back. “Well,” she took a breath, “we are going to need a feather, but not just any feather. We will need a feather from a magical bird, a phoenix preferably and it will need to be freshly plucked.”
Salazar had just poured himself a glass of rum and taken a sip when Rowena made this announcement. Spitting and sputtering he said, “You’d might as well ask for the moon. You’re more likely to get it.”
“I’ll go since I’m the only one who’s actually seen a phoenix.” said Godric getting up. “I’d better get ready, this may take several days.”
He left the room and waited for Rowena to follow him.
“Godric why not just....” she began but stopped at he raised a hand for silence.
“There are some errands I have to run.” he said, “I have to find the Guardians for the forest. When I’ve done that, I’ll return and you can pluck whichever feather you wish from me.”
“Fine.” she said flatly and watched him walk away, out of the castle and into the forest.

Chapter 5 continued
Two fortnights later Rowena and Helga were digging up a patch of hard earth for a vegetable garden. Rowena stood up stretching her aching muscles and spotted Godric striding into view talking merrily with a creature that had the body of a horse and the torso of a man. Just before entering the castle grounds the horse-man shook hands with Godric and strode off towards the forest.
Rowena bent down and shook Helga out of her self imposed single-mindedness. “Helga.” when she did not respond right away she gave her friend a harder shove. “HELGA!”
Helga grumbled and stood up glaring at Rowena. “What by Merlin’s grey beard could be so important?”
Rowena answered by pointing a long slender finger caked with dark rich earth in Godric’s direction.
“Oh.” Helga said, eyebrows raised. “Well Row, I guess we’d better go see what he’s about then hadn’t we.”
Rowena shivered thinking of what happened in Godric’s absence. “Helga maybe we should warn him to come in to the castle from another direction.”
Helga looked up at the towering castle with it’s hundreds of windows then back down at Godric. “It’s too late now Row. Let’s just get him into the work room before Salazar or one of the elves waylay him.”
