Ok, I need new music --- but I don't know what to go after next!
What are you listening to?
I'm hardly one for indie/underground/or incredibly unknown music, so don't expect anything earth-shattering in this post, but here are some of my favourite music artists/albums that I've been listening to over the past 2 months or so. I don't care for particular genres (as you will soon notice), I just like what I like:
-> James Blunt, "Back to Bedlam" - Keane's album was my favourite this past summer, and Bedlam (also a British breakout artist of recent times) reminds me a bit of Keane but slightly darker, sadder, and all-around more appropriate for the winter months. Still, some of Blunt's songs are very sweet (or rather, bittersweet), such as "You're Beautiful" which has gotten a significant amount of play on the airwaves recently. My favourite songs of his are "High" and "Wisemen" although "Out of My Mind" and "No Bravery" are also good (though have major political undertones).
-> Matisyahu, "Live at Stubbs" - this is strangely addicting music. Matisyahu is a 20-something Haisidic (Orthodox, or extremely conservative/traditional) Jew who sings........ reggae. Yes, reggae. Usually with very strongly religious/cultural Jewish themes. Now, I am not particularly fond of reggae, nor am I Jewish. But apparently he's gained quite the following amongst people of all ages, backgrounds, and religions, me amongst them. On a side note, it's good study music for me because I'm taking a religions course this semester and songs about the destruction of the Temple remind me to study. anyways, it's interesting, so I'd recommend listening if you get the chance.
-> Green Day, "American Idiot" - okay, everyone knows this and has heard it a million times. But I think it takes four years in Canada studying Political Science and being discriminated against because you're American to fully appreciate the song "American Idiot." Plus, the song "Holiday" tends to get me into daydreams of relaxing on a warm, sandy beach in some tropical paradise. Until the interlude when they criticize our government, and I'm reminded to not fall behind on my Poli Sci readings.
-> Lucky Boys Confusion, "Throwing the Game" - a punk-rock band from Chicago that should be more popular than it actually is. The sound of each of their songs is unique (ranges from angst to pretty) and most of their lyrics are surprisingly perspicacious.
-> *Utter crap pick of the month*: Ashlee Simpson, "I am me." - Yes, she is her, and you'll be glad you're not her when you listen to this album. Enough said. Good angst music... although it's difficult to say whether this is good for trying to channel angst through, or if it actually creates angst instead. I do not recommend listening to more than two of her songs in a row.
My all-time favourite musicians are Celine (for personal/emotional attachment reasons more than anything) and Avril Lavigne (who hasn't produced anything in years. she must have grown out of her angsty teen years and no longer has the need to write songs about how her boyfriend isn't good enough to her... incidentally, I did hear that she got engaged about a year ago, haha. I guess that explains things.)
