On the left of the page listing the topics there is a column with folders and one with either a smilie or a ?. What are these for? Also one of the folders has something on it and the other doesn't. Why? Showing my lack of computer knowledge, but help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Kats,
In the first column there is a folder icon with a small circle. The color of the circle varies, depending if there is an unread message in it.
When you're in a subforum, you can start a new topic. When doing so, you can select what kind of icon you want on the left of the topic title. When I started the trivia thread, I thought the question mark was most fitting, so I selected that one.
Hope this answers your question!

YW!
I'm a technomuggle in training! On the GH thread, some people asked about avatars (the small pictures on the left of posts) and sigs. There are some standard avatars to pic from, but (as far as I can remember), none of them feature HP. So, the best thing to do is to link to an avatar you have placed on the web, or google for an avatar and fill in that link.
Now, to use an image in your signature, you must copy the following tags (without spaces) into the text box:
[ img ][ /img ]
Between those tags you put the internet link to the picture. (If you have a picture, yet haven't got a place to put it on the internet, send me a personal message cause I can host it on my website.)
If you want the picture to be a link to a website (like my sig pic is a link to the Mugwumps site), you add the following tags (again without the spaces):
[ URL =http://www.mugwumps.tk][ /url ]
As an example, the code for my entire sig is (again, minus the spaces):
[ URL=http://www.mugwumps.tk][ img]http://home.wanadoo.nl/ben_verstaeten/1.jpg
I hope this made sense, if not, please ask what I should clarify and I'll try to do that.
Richard

Good job Richard!!! As a computer teacher at an elementary school I have to deal with people asking computer questions ALL DAY!!! Sometimes it's hard to "dumb" (sorry, but couldn't think of a better word ) the technology jargon down so that those who aren't techno savvy can understand. I must confess that I sometimes start going into all that techno speak and people just look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. I blame my dear hubby Brian for turning me into a techno geek. I wasn't like this before...I swear!!! ;D As for the avatars, there are several places on the web that have avatars, but for some good HP ones you can go to Mugglenet and look in the Media Section.

Cissa, I know perfectly well what you mean. Especially after working on my personal website, I've been into tags and codes, and apparently couldn't explain it all in understandable language.
Oh, if anyone has a picture but has no where to host it, please contact me and I can host it.

Hi Raven,
The link doesn't work, as the pictures are in an album. What you could do is make a screen shot of your screen (there is a 'prt sc' key on most keyboards which makes screen shots), paste it into paint and then select the and copy the piece of the screen you want. If you save it as a .jpg or .gif file, you can send it to me and I'll host.
Hope this works.

Forget my last post, I found the image. I've hosted it and sent you the link with a PM. It gives the image below. Richard PS Elle, can you move this topic to the new help forum?

Thanks, richard! Rave, check the list of default avatars. (edit your profile then scroll through the list of available avatars.)

Sure... I don't see any problem with posting off-topic works in the Library.
Off topic posts can really be made anywhere, we've always been fairly flexible about that in our"Great Hall" regular chat section, but I also set aside a few other sections (like the Flourish and Blotts, Muggleland, and Magical Me) if people want to make larger off-topic posts and feel more comfortable doing that away from the regular HP discussion.

I'm still struggling with the avatar thing. I'm gonna try a little longer. I don't know how to view them to decide which I want.
